HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Junior Matt Lorenz (Gulf Shores, Ala.) fired a final-round 71 to finish tied for seventh in leading Southern Miss at the Conference USA Championships, Tuesday, being held at the Texarkana Country Club in Texarkana, Ark.
The event, which was originally supposed to take three days to complete the first 54 holes, was shortened to two days because of expected bad weather to the area on Wednesday at the par-72, 6,900-yard course.
The Golden Eagles, which shot a 294 over the final round, finished tied for ninth with an 885 stroke total.
"I am proud of our guys continuing to fight till the end," said Southern Miss men's golf coach Eddie Brescher. "Unfortunately, this was not our week but our team has made some great strides forward this season."
Lorenz bettered his stroke total following each round, starting with a 73 over the first 18 holes yesterday before posting a second-round 72 to finish Monday. In the final round, he collected two birdies and suffered just one bogey to collect his ninth par or below round this season.
"Matt played well this week," said Brescher. "He is a great player and we all know he can perform at a high level. In golf, there will be trials of adversity. I am happy to see Matt overcome a few tough rounds this spring and end his season on a high note with a top 10."
Sophomore Brian Richards (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) fell out of the Top 10 with a final-round 76 to post a 218 and record a 17th-place tie, while freshman Joey Kirkland (West Monroe, La.) added a 75 for a 225 totals and a tie for 38th place.
Junior Walker Kesterson (Hartsburg, Mo.) collected a final-round 75 to finish in 51st place with a 229 and senior Nathan Corchis (Water Sound, Fla.), who posted his best round of the tournament with a 73, ended the event with a 235 and a 60th place.
"I want to thank Nathan for stepping up for our team and posting a good score today," said Brescher. "Nathan has been a part of our program for a long time now. I am happy to see him end his collegiate career with a good score."
Jake Benson of Rice won the individual medalist honors with a five-under 211. UTSA, Middle Tennessee, Charlotte and UAB, the top four teams finishers in stroke play, will play for the team title in match play starting later Tuesday afternoon.
