Brian Richards is tied for fourth after 36 holes.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss sophomore Brian Richards fired a second-round, four-under 68 to lead the Golden Eagles in the opening day of the Conference USA Championship being played in Texarkana, Ark.
The event, which is being held at the par-72, 6,900-yard Texarkana Country Club, saw the teams play 36 holes during the opening day of the event due to weather concerns later in the week. The final 18 holes have also been moved up to Tuesday with the possibility of starting match play for the top four teams in the afternoon.
The Gulf Breeze, Fla., native collected five birdies over the final nine holes to post his fourth sub-70 score this season. After shooting a first-round 74, Richards ended his day with a two-under 142 which puts him in a fourth-place tie.
"Brian had a stellar round this afternoon," said Southern Miss men's golf coach Eddie Brescher. "Shooting 68 on this course is a very impressive round. It was great to see Brian and Matt (Lorenz) play great today to lead our squad. We know our guys will be there for us tomorrow. We may be a few shots back, but definitely not out of it."
Junior Matt Lorenz (Gulf Shores, Ala.) enjoyed rounds of 73 and 72 for a 145 total to place tied for 15th. Lorenz shot a two-under par over his final 10 holes, shooting par over the final eight to notch his eighth round of par or below this season.
Freshman Joey Kirkland (West Monroe, La.) added rounds of 76 and 74 for a 150 and a 36th-place tie, while junior Walker Kesterson (Hartsburg, Mo.) added a 75 and a 79 for a 154 and a 52nd-place tie. Senior Nathan Corchis (Water Sound, Fla.) rounded out the Golden Eagle scoring with an 83 and a 70 for a 162 stroke total and a 64th-place tie.
The Golden Eagles posted rounds of 298 and 293 to register a 591, which puts them in a two-way tie for eighth place with Louisiana Tech (292-299).
"The course was playing difficult today," said Brescher. "As we have learned before, this course will show its teeth when your approach is short-sided or out of position. The biggest key here is taking advantage from 150 yards and in. As a whole we had a solid day.
"This event is a bit different from a mental standpoint. The key is making that top four and advancing to match play. Once you advance, it's an entirely new tournament."
UTSA shot a one-under 575 to hold the lead after the opening day, while WKU is four strokes back in second place at 579 with UAB in third place at 580.
The final round will start at 8 a.m., Tuesday. Live scoring can be followed here.
