Men's Golf Travels to C-USA Championships

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss men's golf team battles for the Conference USA Championship this week as they open the league tournament event Monday at the Texarkana Country Club in Texarkana, Ark.
The championship is four days, with 18 holes scheduled for each of the first three days. After 54 holes of stroke play, the top four teams would be seeded and will conclude the championship on the fourth day with a match play playoff. Playing partners for the first day will be determined by a blind draw. For every succeeding round, team scores will determine pairings. The winner gains the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
The event takes place on the par-72, 6,935-yard course. The Golden Eagles begin teeing off at 8 a.m., Monday morning and Southern Miss will utilize the five-member group of Walker Kesterson, Brian Richards, Joey Kirkland, Matt Lorenz and Nathan Corchis.
"This course doesn't look like much on paper," said Southern Miss coach Eddie Brescher. "Being 6,900 yards is a shorter course for these guys. However, it shows its teeth when you place your approach shots out of position. We constantly talk about the importance of 150 yards and in. If we take care of business inside of 150 yards, we should have a good chance this week."
The Golden Eagles are looking to finish their season strong this week.
"We are looking forward to having an opportunity to bounce back after last week," said Brescher, whose team participated in the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship last week. "Our program is loaded with talent and when we put it together, we can compete with any team. We have put it together multiple times this season and we aim to do that again this week.
"This week is a clean slate for everyone. It's anyone's tournament to win. Our sights are set on just that, winning."
