Southern Miss Softball Travels to UAB for C-USA Series

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss softball team (23-16, 8-7 C-USA) will travel to Birmingham Ala. for a weekend series against the UAB Blazers (15-23, 5-9 C-USA).
The series will begin with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 13. Game one of Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. (CT) with game two to follow shortly after the conclusion of game one.
Saturday's doubleheader was moved up to two hours prior to the original start time due to projected rain in the Birmingham area.
The Golden Eagles and the Blazers will wrap up the series with a single-game series finale at 1:00 p.m. (CT) on Sunday, April 14.
The last time on the diamond
Southern Miss' last outing came on Wednesday night against in-state SWAC opponent Mississippi Valley State. The Golden Eagles won the midweek matchup by a final score of 4-2.
Heather Hill paced the Golden Eagles' offense with two base knocks and an RBI.
Freshman pitcher Kaylan Ladner tossed a gem for the Golden Eagles. In 6.1 innings pitched, the right-hander scattered six hits, allowed two runs (both earned), issued one walk, struck out seven and collected her fourth win of the season.
Noteworthy moments
UAB leads the all-time series with a record of 36-27. The Golden Eagles are 17-13 when facing the Blazers in Hattiesburg, 9-18 in games played in Birmingham and 1-5 in neutral site matchups.
The last meeting
The two teams last met when they played a three-game series in April of 2018 at the Southern Miss Softball Complex in Hattiesburg.
UAB won the series 2-1. The Blazers took a 7-3 decision in game one and a 9-1 decision in game three. Southern Miss avoided the series sweep with a 3-2 victory in game two.
The opponent
The Blazers are coached by Head Coach Jimmy Kolaitis. Kolaitis is currently in the middle of his first season as the head coach of the UAB softball program. Before taking over the reins at UAB, Kolaitis spent five seasons at the University of Oregon where he held various roles during his time with the program including: assistant coach, recruiting coordinator and hitting coach.
The last time that UAB took the field, they dropped an extra-innings midweek contest to SEC opponent Ole Miss on Wednesday night in Oxford. The game went eight innings before Ole Miss claimed a 3-2 victory.

- Freshman right-handed pitcher Makenna Pierce registered the first save of her Southern Miss career after helping preserve a 4-2 victory for Southern Miss against Mississippi Valley State on Wednesday night.
