Southern Miss Softball Drops Saturday Doubleheader to North Texas

The Golden Eagles are now 10-10 overall and 0-2 in C-USA play.
DENTON, Texas – The Southern Miss softball team (10-10, 0-2) dropped Saturday's doubleheader to North Texas (13-8, 2-0). The Golden Eagles were defeated by the Mean Green, 7-5 in game one and, 4-3 in game two.
Southern Miss took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning of game one when Lacey Sumerlin laced an RBI single down the left field line, scoring Chase Nelson.
Unfortunately for the Golden Eagles, their 1-0 lead was short lived as the Mean Green stormed back in the bottom of the first inning by scoring seven runs to take a 7-1 lead.
Southern Miss began to claw their way back in the top of the second inning when Sarah Van Schaik ripped a single to left field, scoring Heather Hill and Kaitlyn Passeau to make the score 7-3.
Sumerlin then followed Van Schaik with an RBI double, which Van Schaik scored on, making the score 7-4.
The Golden Eagles got another boost in the top of the sixth inning when freshman right fielder and Lucedale, Miss. Kaitlyn Passeau blasted a solo homerun over the right field wall. Passeau's sixth inning home run marked the first of her Southern Miss career.
After Passeau's home run, North Texas locked in and captured a 7-5 victory.
Much like game one, Southern Miss grabbed an early lead in game two by banging out three runs in the top of the third inning.
Madison Rayner kicked things off in the third inning with an RBI single that scored Tata Davis, and Van Schaik added a two RBI double that allowed both Rayner and Nelson to cross the plate.
Things went smoothly for Southern Miss until North Texas mustered a four-run rally in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 4-3 lead which they managed to hold on to in the final frames, earning their second win of the day.
Southern Miss and North Texas will wrap up the three-game C-USA series at 12:00 p.m. (CT) on Sunday, March 10 at Lovelace Stadium in Denton, Texas.
