HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Freshman Joey Kirkland (West Monroe, La.) shot a second-round, one-under 71 to lead Southern Miss after the opening day of the 34th annual Louisiana Classics Monday in Lafayette, La.
Kirkland, who opened the tournament with a 76, ended his day at the par-72, 6,866-yard Oakbourne Country Club course with a 147 total that placed him tied for 13th with 18 more holes left set for Tuesday beginning with an 8 a.m., shotgun start.
"We got off to a good start in the first round and played very well," said Southern Miss golf coach Eddie Brescher. "We slipped a bit on holes 4 and 5, but countered those mistakes with birdies. The second round we faced rain which is always a challenge. Our guys handled it well and fought for every shot. I'm very proud of the toughness our team displayed today.
"Big shout out to Joey on breaking par for our team in the second round. Posting a sub-par round for our team in those conditions is exceptional. We are looking forward to finish up on a strong note tomorrow."
Junior Walker Kesterson (Hartsburg, Mo.) added rounds of 73 and 76 (149 total) putting him in a 23rd-place tie. Both junior Matt Lorenz (Gulf Shores, Ala.) and sophomore Brian Richards (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) are tied for 45th place by each scoring a 151 total. Lorenz shot rounds of 73 and 78, with Richards collecting a 75 and a 76.
Senior Derick Kelting (Amarillo, Texas) ended his day with rounds of 75 and 85 to post a 155 and a 67th-place tie.
The Golden Eagles posted team rounds of 296 and 301, tying them with Louisiana Tech for 6th place.
