HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss men's tennis team is looking to build off its early-season experience when it heads to Beaumont, Texas, to face UT Rio Grande Valley on Saturday (10 a.m. CT) and Lamar on Sunday (12 p.m.).
The Golden Eagles are aiming to return to the win column after two tough defeats at UAB (4-1) and UL Lafayette (4-0) in which they had multiple opportunities for singles points before time ran out. Freshman Matthieu Peres earned a victory in his collegiate debut against the Blazers, and the addition of grad student Youssef Tamimount will add significant depth and talent to the roster.
Panji Setiawan, Jorman Reyes and Ronit Bisht are a combined 7-0 in singles, and Mieszko Kwasniewski has competed in all four of the team's doubles action with a different partner each time.
UTRGV is 2-5 with a grueling schedule. It has one common opponent with the Golden Eagles, UAB, which took a 4-0 victory. The Vaqueros have also faced two top-10 teams in Baylor and Texas A&M.
Lamar is in a similar boat, entering the weekend 1-5 with losses to New Mexico, Texas Tech, LSU, New Orleans and UTSA. It did, however, earn a 4-2 win over Nicholls in Baton Rouge.
