Southern Miss Falls to Nicholls, 4-1 in Thibodaux

The Wednesday night loss marked the first of the season for the Golden Eagles
THIBODAUX, La. – The Southern Miss softball team (5-1) fell to Nicholls (4-2) by a final score of 4-1 on Wednesday night in Thibodaux, La.
The Colonels jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning after Maegen Ellis scored on an error and Emma Holland scored on Kasey Frederick's single to left field.
Nicholls added two more runs to their total, scoring one run in the bottom of the fourth inning and another in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Nicholls' third run of the game came in the bottom of the fourth inning when Bailey Hughes crossed the plate courtesy of single off the bat of Veronica Villafranco.
The Colonels fourth scored their fourth and final run of the game via a sacrifice fly from Frederick that allowed Holland to score from third base.
The Golden Eagles made some noise in the top of the seventh inning when shortstop Lacey Sumerlin drew a two-out walk and catcher Samantha Papp followed with a single up the middle that allowed Sumerlin to advance to third base.
Designated player Heather Hill then drove in the first run of the game for Southern Miss after smashing a line drive RBI single to center field, scoring Sumerlin.
Nicholls' starting pitcher Megan Landry earned the win, improving her record to 3-1. Southern Miss starter Abby Trahan (2-1) took the loss.
The Golden Eagles will continue their road trip by heading to Waco, Texas for the Getterman Classic hosted by Baylor University February 15-17.
Southern Miss will take on UT Arlington (2-3) at 12:30 p.m. (CT) at Getterman Stadium. The Golden Eagles will then face #16 Baylor in the Friday nightcap at 5:30 p.m. (CT).
