Southern Miss Fights Off Faulkner to Finish 2019

The Lady Eagles finish the calendar year on a high note with a win.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Lady Eagles of Southern Miss women's basketball finishes off the calendar year with another tick in the win column, defeating Faulkner 71-59 on Saturday afternoon in Reed Green Coliseum.
Southern Miss improves to 8-3 on the season after taking down Faulkner (9-6). Southern Miss came out hot, putting up 22 points against the Lady Eagles of Faulkner in the first quarter. They shut down Faulkner in the second quarter, only allowing them nine points in the second frame. Coming out of the half, Faulkner seemed to have a new fire. They posted 16 points to Southern Miss' 18 in the third, and out-scored the Lady Eagles 18-15 in the fourth. Southern Miss held on, and eventually came away with the win. The Lady Eagles never trailed against Faulkner.
The Lady Eagles were led by Kelsey Jones in scoring, who put up 18 points, all from within the paint. The redshirt sophomore erased her previous season-high of made field goals with eight, and matched her season-high of attempted field goals with 10. Senior Amber Landing wiped the board, posting seven rebounds, tying her season-high. Seniors Shonte Hailes and Alarie Mayze both dished out five assists.
This was the first time the Lady Eagles of Southern Miss faced the Lady Eagles of Faulkner, and they start the series at 1-0.
