HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss led 25-10 to begin the game and maintained pressure the rest of the way en route to an 83-64 win over Hub City neighbor William Carey on Sunday afternoon.
"Since coming back from Iowa State, I thought we had two good days of practice," head coach Jay Ladner said. "I saw some progress. There is not one phase of the game we can't improve on. Due to the fact we are so young, we make a lot of those mistakes and will have to continue to play harder.
"It was good for us to get a win. We had two last-second losses and then went to Iowa State, one of the great college venues, and hung in for a while before a big run that was the difference in the game."
By the 8:10 mark of the first half, nine of 10 Golden Eagles to see the floor had scored as the Black and Gold extended the lead to 30-14. David McCoy II, a newcomer out of Jones College, hit a three-pointer on his first shot attempt of the season that beat the shot clock.
Tyler Stevenson and Boban Jacdonmi each led the way with 15 points, going a combined 13-for-20 from the field. Gabe Watson and Leonard Harper-Baker each added 10 as well. Jay Malone, a sophomore transfer from SW Mississippi CC, made his first start of the season and produced a game-high seven assists. It was the third time in five games he has had more dimes than shot attempts.
"Good things happen to people who have a positive attitude and work hard," Ladner said of Stevenson. "He's a great embodiment of that. He came to Southern Miss as a walk-on and earned a scholarship. He plays with tremendous energy. Just like him and Boban Jacdonmi, neither of them played much last season. One was 7-for-11 from the field, and the other was 6-for-9. Each works their tail off in practice. I would love for all of our guys to see them as an example."
The Golden Eagles led 42-29 at the half and never let the visiting Crusaders come any closer.
Southern Miss (2-3) will leave for the Bahamas early Monday morning to play in the Battle 4 Atlantis. The action begins Wednesday at 6 p.m. CT against Gonzaga on ESPNU.
