HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Three road games later, the Southern Miss men's basketball team is finally home again Sunday to host crosstown neighbor William Carey at 2 p.m. CT.
Fans can follow the action on CUSA.tv, where John Cox will have the call as well as on the Southern Miss IMG Learfield Network (Rock 104.5 in Hattiesburg/Laurel) and the Gameday app.
Game Notes
– This is Southern Miss' first home game since the season opener on Nov. 5, spanning the country by bus and plane to Mobile, Jacksonville and Ames, Iowa. The Golden Eagles had the ball with a chance to tie or win in their final possession the first two games, but fell victim to Iowa State's size and home-court advantage on Tuesday night, 73-45.
– The Golden Eagles led 18-16 against the Cyclones after an 8-0 hole, but an 11-0 run ended the half at 33-20. Following a few early Iowa State scores to begin the second, Southern Miss diversified its lineup with a predominantly freshman-and-sophomore look (136 of the game's overall 200 minutes). It served as meaningful reps against stout competition which will bolster team depth going forward.
– Boban Jacdonmi led the way with 10 points and eight rebounds in just 16 minutes, remaining the team leader in each category so far. He has reached double-figures in points all four games after scoring just 30 last season (with 13 boards). Artur Konontsuk was also in double-figures each of the first three games this season and is averaging 10.0 ppg.
– Auston Leslie, Alabama's 3A Player of the Year and a seven-time state champ in track, made his debut in Ames and showcased relentless energy, collecting a steal, two offensive rebounds and a layup in his 15 minutes. Hunter Dean had missed the first two games due to injury, and after two minutes at UNF, played 14 more against the Cyclones. He was 3-for-6 from the field with a pair of dunks.Â
– The Golden Eagles have out-rebounded their opponents by an average of 9.3 per game so far, led by seniors Jacdonmi and Leonard Harper-Baker (both at 8.5). Iowa State was the first team to win that battle this year (39-37), although the Golden Eagles held a 13-7 advantage on the offensive glass.
– While still searching for their groove on three-point shots, the squad has held its last three opponents to 28.4 percent shooting (21-for-74). Southern Miss, after logging its share of miles during that span, will look to get back on track after a season-low 33.3 percent outing at Iowa State.Â
– The point guard spot is switched between starter Gabe Watson and reserve Jay Malone, both sophomores. While the two have shared the floor at the same time, their added exposure against Division I competition has been bolstered by the three-game road swing. Watson averaged 14 minutes per game as a true freshman, while Malone was at SW Mississippi CC.
– When Southern Miss last hosted William Carey, it was coming off a four-game road swing that included wins at SMU and Troy, followed by a two-game split in Cancun. The all-time series began in 2003, with the Golden Eagles holding a 12-2 advantage (three of those wins vacated). From last year's defeat to the Crusaders, the Golden Eagles return 66 of that game's 200 minutes. Harper-Baker had nine points and a then-career-high 13 rebounds after missing the previous two games. LaDavius Draine also added eight points and seven boards.
– The Golden Eagles will look to find more offensive rhythm in the friendly confines of Reed Green Coliseum. The only home game so far was a 90-71 victory over Delta State, which featured a 49-29 halftime lead and a 58-18 advantage in the paint.
– WCU head coach Steve Knight is a 2002 Southern Miss M-Club Hall of Fame inductee, having enjoyed a successful baseball career at the school that included a few years in the minors. He is also a 2015 Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame honoree. He currently has 705 wins in his 38 years at the helm.
