HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss men's golf coach Eddie Brescher announced Thursday the addition of two student-athletes for the 2020-21 golf season, including Warwick Purchase (Pretoria, South Africa) and Bennett Ruby (Waterloo, Ontario).
Purchase, from St. Albans College, posted a scoring average of 74.21 over 51 rounds from 2017-19 and enjoys nine Top 15 finishes over 18 events in Golf RSA events. He was the 2018 Junior Order of Merit Champion in the event held at Benoni Lake Golf Club and was the 2018 and 2019 Dainfern National College Champion.
"Warwick is a seasoned veteran that has a great overall game," said Brescher. "He has some good distance off the tee which will aid his performance on the longer Division I courses that we play. Warwick competes in a lot of events and takes his academics very seriously, adding to the strength and depth of our team for future years."
Ruby, from the Waterloo Collegiate Institute, was a 2019 Canadian National Team member, while also collecting a Canadian Junior Order of Merit Top 5, as well a MJT Spring Classic championship. Ruby posted eight Top 15 finishes in 12 events this year and was the runner-up for the 2018 Williamson Cup. He enjoys a scoring average of 74.91 over 35 tournament rounds in 2019.
"Bennett is an all-around fantastic player," said Brescher. "His game resembles a Dustin Johnson, long hitter with a great short game. He is definitely the longest junior golfer I have ever seen. We saw Bennett two years ago in Canada and were immediately impressed with his character and golf abilities. He is a good student that comes from a fantastic and disciplined family. We look to him as being a consistent stable in our lineup for many years to come."
These two individuals will help build the Golden Eagle men's golf program as it has continued to improve over the tenure of Brescher.
"Our 2020 signing class is fantastic," said Brescher. "We have been very clear with the intentions of our men's golf program. Those intentions are to win Conference USA Championships, become a regular NCAA postseason team, and continue to be the No. 1 men's team in terms of grade point average on campus. Both of these players will certainly help us attain these intentions.
"With all that we have to offer in Hattiesburg, we are attracting the best players in the world to join our golf program. With golf being a global sport, it is important to our future success we continue to attract the best student-athletes from all over the world."
