Football Finishes Two-Game C-USA Road Swing at Rice

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss looks to get back to its winning ways when they wrap up a two-game road swing this Saturday in a Conference USA West Division contest at Rice.
Game time is set for 12 noon and will be streamed live via ESPN+ as well as broadcast over one of the affiliates of the Southern Miss Sports Network presented by Learfield IMG College and through the Southern Miss Game Day app.
The Golden Eagles (4-3 overall, 2-1 C-USA) take a four-game winning streak over the Owls (0-7, 0-3) into the game.
Southern Miss quarterback Jack Abraham, a member of the Manning Award Watch list, leads the way for the Golden Eagles with 2,263 yards passing on 155-of-220 attempts with 13 touchdowns and eight interceptions.
On the ground, De'Michael Harris paces the rushing attack with 282 yards on 58 carries, while Quez Watkins has 630 receiving yards in just five games to lead the receivers. Jaylond Adams, another Golden Eagle receiver, has the most catches with 40.
Freshman place kicker Andrew Stein has converted 10 of his first 12 field goal attempts, including a career-long 46-yarder last weekend, while also hitting 21-of-22 extra points. He also takes care of kickoff duties and is averaging 59.5 yards per kickoff with 13 touchbacks over his first 30.
Punter Zac Everett averages 39.4 yards per boot over 20 attempts with seven inside the opponent's 20-yardline and four of 50 yards or more.
On the defensive side, Ky'el Hemby leads the way in tackles with 51 with DQ Thomas a close second with 50. Thomas, though, heads the squad in tackles for loss at 8.5, while his 3.0 sacks are also tops.
In addition, Thomas ranks tied for first for the Golden Eagles with a pair of interceptions along with Rachuan Mitchell.
As for the Owls, they have used two quarterbacks during the year in Wiley Green and Tom Stewart, whose passing stats have been similar. Green has thrown for 683 yards and three touchdowns, while Stewart has added 532 yards and four throwing scores.
Aston Walter holds the best numbers in the Owls rushing attack with 504 yards and five scores with a 4.6 yards per carry. Brad Rozner ranks top for receiving yards with 479 and a couple of touchdowns.
The Rice defense starts with Blaze Alldredge who tops the Owls with 59 stops, including team bests of 12.5 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks.
Following the Rice contest, the Golden Eagles enjoy its second off week before returning home Saturday, Nov. 9, when they play host to UAB at The Rock for a 2:30 p.m. contest.
