HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss volleyball team dropped its final match of the Rebel Invitational to Ole Miss (6-1, 0-0 SEC) in a five-set thriller (25-27, 20-25, 25-29, 25-15, 10-15) on Sunday afternoon. Â
Â
The Golden Eagles scored the first point of the game to take an early lead, but that lead quickly evaporated as Ole Miss charged back. However, the Golden Eagles recovered and led by as many as four late in the set, but a 6-1 run by Ole Miss ended in a 27-25 win for the Rebels.
Â
Southern Miss trailed by as many as 10 in the second set before cutting its deficit to four, but Ole Miss hung on to take a two-set lead. Down two sets, the Golden Eagles sparked a comeback that pushed the Rebels to the brink. They didn't trail at any point in the third set and went on to dominate the fourth set as well. A 25-15 win in the fourth set allowed the Golden Eagles a chance for a rare feat – a comeback from a two-set deficit.
Â
Trailing in the final set, Southern Miss mounted another comeback to cut the Ole Miss lead to three, but it wasn't enough. The Rebels won the fifth set via a 15-10 score.
