Matt Lorenz Named C-USA Men’s Golfer of the Week

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss junior Matt Lorenz (Gulf Shores, Ala.) earned the Conference USA Men's Golf Player of the Week on the strength of winning his first collegiate tournament in an announcement made Wednesday by the league office.
Lorenz finished the 54-hole Sam Hall Intercollegiate, which was hosted by Southern Miss and played at the Hattiesburg Country Club, with a 205-stroke total. He compiled rounds of 69, 69 and 67, besting Tyler Copp of Mercer by three strokes in his title run. Lorenz became just the third Southern Miss player to win the Sam Hall Intercollegiate, and the first since Casey Fernandez did it in 2014.
The 67 over his final 18 holes of the event accounted for a career low score for a round, while his 205, 54-hole total also was a career best. Lorenz now boasts five sub-70 rounds in his Golden Eagle career.
Lorenz also captured the 102nd Alabama State Amateur Golf Championship last summer.
This is the first C-USA weekly award for Lorenz and the first for the program since Derick Kelting snagged the honor on March 29, 2017.
