MOBILE, Ala. -- The Southern Miss women's golf team had a banner second day at the USA Intercollegiate, finishing 6-under par to jump from the No. 11 spot to sixth on the leaderboard heading into Monday's final round.
The team's 282 was second behind the 280 it carded in the final round of the Kiawah Island Invitational (Feb. 2017). The squad also posted a 286 at the end of the Jim West Invitational (Sept. 2017), which then stood as the second-best round in program history.
The Golden Eagles were eight strokes ahead of the next-best performer, WKU, which was 2-over par. The Hilltoppers, Lamar and Tulane are all tied for third and one stroke ahead of Southern Miss' 580 in the overall standings.
Senior Valentina Haupt's 4-under 68 tied for the best round by anyone in the field so far. It was also a 12-stroke improvement from Saturday, and marked a new career-low score (previously a 70 in the 2016 C-USA Championships, her freshman year). Julie Baker also cut five strokes off her team-high 74, as her 69 put her in a tie for 10th. The only bogie from the duo came from Baker on the 10th hole, a par-4. That too marked a career-low for the sophomore.
Miranda Holt also regained her form on the back nine, rallying from a 4-over showing to shoot even on the final stretch, and Cassidy Evreniadis lowered her score by a stroke from Day One.
Southern Miss' 17-stroke improvement from Day 1-2 was six strokes ahead of Georgia State for the highest rise in the field. Its 29 birdies are one off second-place Cal Baptist for the most in the field as well.
The Golden Eagles will look to continue the strong momentum into Monday morning's final round.
