The Lady Eagles met their match in the Mexican professional team.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Lady Eagles played their second game of their trip abroad against the Mexican professional team on Wednesday night, dropping a 56-63 decision against the league champions.Â
The Game According to Head Coach Joye Lee-McNelis
"Tonight we faced a very good Mexican professional team who recently won the Professional League in Mexico. They featured two 6'4" post players who dominated inside as well as the best three-ball shooter in their league. It was a challenge for our Lady Eagles to play against a team with such experience. Each time we made a run to pull within four points they would capitalize on our mistakes on and off the ball. We must learn to fight through fatigue until we can rotate players in for each other. The first half we played them basket for basket and then in the closing two minutes of the half we allowed fatigue to take over went in down 25-18. Our staff went in at the half with the challenge to our team to overcome our mental side to allow our physical bodies to compete. We out scored them them 20-17 to cut their lead to four. To start the 4th quarter the Lady Eagles tied the game at 44 with four minutes to play and poor shot selection on three consecutive trips gave the Mexican professional team the momentum. The Lady Eagles fell short 63-56, but it was a great experience for our team mentally and physically. My concern now is how will we respond to a tough loss."
Ballin' Abroad with Megan Brown
Two words: Efficiency and physicality. With a 24 second shot clock, the game just speeds up. Also, these girls are just tough. Competing against national and professional teams becomes about which team can be the most efficient consistently. Friendly trash talk is also a bit different with my limited Spanish. I'm so excited for this opportunity for our team to grow together.Â
Noteables
Redshirt senior Megan Brown led the team in scoring with 24 points. Right behind her was junior Alarie Mayze with 10. Brown and sophomore Kennedy Gavin both had six rebounds.Â
Community Basketball Camp
The Lady Eagles participated in a community basketball camp with over 150 participants. Players helped man different stations at the camp and interacted with campers. Redshirt junior Camille Anderson described being at the camp, saying, "I thought it was very amazing how basketball can bring many different cultures together and that we had the opportunity to help them grow as basketball players. I led the lay-up and shooting station at camp along with Kelsey Jones. We taught them how to do right and left hand lay-ups and with the advanced group we did jump shots as well. I led my station mostly by hand signals and examples of the drills we were doing. I also had some help from a few of the campers who understood some English. I genuinely enjoyed teaching the campers and seeing their excitement and joy from being here and learning from us. I have never done anything like it so it was a very enjoyable experience for me."
Up Next
The Lady Eagles will play the Guatemalan national team next for their last game while abroad, and will continue to participate in fun excursions and activities until they return home.
