HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Incoming Southern Miss baseball players, outfielder/pitcher Brant Blaylock (Southaven, Miss.) and left-handed pitcher Brooks Warren (French Camp, Miss.) will each play on the 26-man NJCAA National Baseball team, which will compete in the 84th NBC World Series in Wichita, Kan., Aug. 1-11.
The roster of 13 pitchers, three catchers, five infielders, four outfielders, and one utility player will take on top talent from around the world as 21 different NJCAA schools are represented from 10 different states and all three divisions.
The National team will assemble at Tyler (Texas) Junior College, July 25-26. The players and staff will train together for a week before departing for the World Series at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
Blaylock had a standout 2018 season in Senatobia after transferring in from Mississippi State, hitting .385 with a .833 slugging percentage and leading the team in hits (60), runs scored (52), multi-hit games (17), multi-RBI games (13), home runs (18) and RBIs (62). He was named First Team All-MACJC and NJCAA All-Region 23.
The two-time MACJC Player of the Week selection broke a 19-year school record with his 18th home run in the NJCAA Region 23 playoffs against Mississippi Gulf Coast. His 62 RBIs ranked second-best in a single season at the school.
Warren, who was selected in last month's MLB First-Year Player Draft in the 20th round by the New York Mets but has decided instead to attend Southern Miss, made 13 appearances (12 starts) this season at East Central Community College, going 6-5 with a 3.56 ERA. He fanned 83 and walked 38 in 65 2/3 innings. Warren tossed two complete games this season en route to being named MACJC Second Team All-State.
