HATTIESBURG, Miss. â€" After winning its eighth-straight Conference USA baseball series last weekend against WKU, Southern Miss travels to Pearl, Miss., to host Ole Miss at Trustmark Park at 6 p.m.
Southern Miss improved to 22-9 on the season and 8-3 in league play after winning its fifth-straight home series on Sunday. Walker Powell tossed a complete game in Sunday's 14-1 win against WKU, the first Southern Miss pitcher to go the distance this season.
Powell struck out four Hilltoppers allowing only three hits off 69 total pitches. 51 of his 69 pitches were strikes while managing to only walk one batter faced.
The Golden Eagles' offense continued to roll outscoring WKU 23-10. Matt Wallner now leads the team with eight home runs after his two-run bomb over the right field wall on Sunday. Wallner has now homered in the last three Sunday contests. Wallner leads both Southern Miss and league play with 39 RBI.
Wallner, Luke Reynolds and Hunter Slater boast a .355 batting average heading into Tuesday's game. Reynolds continues to lead C-USA with both runs scored (37) and drawn walks (31). In the first outing against the Rebels, Slater tallied three hits, including two home runs totaling four RBI.
J.C. Keys will start against the Rebels for the second time this season. Keys posts a 6.26 ERA and fanned three batters in his four-innings pitched the last time out against the Rebels.
Southern Miss remained at the same ranking in three National Polls after the Perfect Game kept the Golden Eagles at No. 14, Baseball America and No. 12 and D1Baseball's No. 13.
Ole Miss enters Tuesday's game after dropping its first series of the season to in-state rival, Mississippi State. The Rebels hold a 27-6 overall record and will compete in its first neutral site game of the season against the Golden Eagles.
