
Softball Splits with UAB in Doubleheader Action

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss softball team splits with UAB in Saturday doubleheader action. The Blazers took the first game, 7-2 but the Golden Eagles came back from a two-run deficit to win the second game, 3-2.
The Black and Gold combined for 14 hits on the day with eight in the first and six in the second. Samantha Papp and Ciarra Cherry both tallied their fifth multi-hit game in game one while Kaley Fruge went 3-for-3 in the night cap and notched her third multi-hit game, her first three hit game as a Golden Eagle.
Samantha Robles (6-11) got the start in the circle for the first game and pitched three innings allowing four runs before Jillian Johnson came in relief. Johnson pitched 3 2/3 innings allowing three runs before Kim Crowson relieved her and finished the game.
Crowson started the night cap and pitched her fifth complete game allowing only two runs with three strikeouts. The senior moves to 7-8 on the season.
UAB 7, Southern Miss 3
The Golden Eagles held a 1-0 lead until the fourth inning when the Blazers put up four runs on four hits including a two-run homer followed by a solo home run to take the 4-1 lead. Southern Miss responded and scored a run in both the fourth and fifth inning to cut the UAB lead, 4-3.
The Blazers, after another solo dinger in the sixth inning took back the two run lead and then sealed the win with a two-run bomb in the seventh, 7-3.
Southern Miss 3, UAB 2
UAB kept the hot bats going, knocking three hits in the first inning and scoring two runs to take an early 2-0 lead. Southern Miss responded in the bottom of the third with two runs from Tata Davis and Sarah Van Schaik.
Davis with her first triple on the season, was brought home on an RBI single from Van Schaik, while Van Schaik came home on an RBI single from Cherry. The Golden Eagles added another run in the bottom of the fourth with the help of a Blazer throwing error. Fruge with the game winning run was safe at home after Rebekah DiLavore reached via UAB error.
Through the next two innings, the Blazers added two hits but the Golden Eagle defense held on and secured the win.
The two teams meet tomorrow for the rubber match at 1 pm in Hattiesburg, Miss. the day is also Seymour Sidekick Appreciation and is packed with activities for kids including carnival games and arts and crafts.
