
UAB Slugging Fest Overcomes Early Golden Eagle Lead

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss softball team drops series to UAB after a 9-1 loss to the Blazers on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Eagles move to 15-29, 5-10 in C-USA play.
The Black and Gold combined for nine hits on the day highlighted by multi-hit games from Samantha Papp, Chase Nelson and Destini Brown; all of whom had two hits in the contest. Sarah Van Schaik was the lone player to score a run for the Golden Eagles in the bottom of the first inning.
Five pitchers saw action in the circle. Kim Crowson (7-9) was given the start and pitched 3 1/3 innings allowing three runs on four hits before left-handed pitcher Reagan Watkins entered the circle. The freshman allowed two hits before giving way to Jillian Johnson. Johnson pitched one complete inning, allowing three runs on two hits when Samantha Robles left the bullpen. Robles lasted 2 1/3 innings and allowed three runs of her own before Jade Lewis got the final out of the game.
Southern Miss scratched the board first with an RBI single from Ciarra Cherry that scored Van Schaik from third after she had singled down the right field line to start the inning. The Golden Eagles held on the 1-0 lead until the top of the fourth when the Blazers put up three runs on four hits.
UAB continued the scoring fest in the top of the fifth, adding three more runs to the board with the help of a Golden Eagle error and then added three more for insurance in the top of the ninth.
The Blazers ended the slugging fest with 14 hits and has left 13 on base during the contest.
Southern Miss returns to the field on Tuesday when they take on the Jaguars of Southern University in a single, non-conference game at 6pm.
