HATTIESBURG, Miss. â€" The Southern Miss baseball team hosts Middle Tennessee at Pete Taylor Park this weekend for their sixth Conference USA series of the season.
Heading into Friday's 6 p.m., contest, the Golden Eagles hold a two-game win streak and have nine-straight conference series wins with a 25-11 overall record (10-4 C-USA). Stevie Powers will make his second consecutive Friday night start against Middle Tennessee after his complete-game shutout at FIU.
Powers boasts a 3-1 record as a starter and a 3.40 ERA. Powers has tossed 52 strike outs through 50 and 1/3 innings pitched. The Georgia native is the second Golden Eagle to pitch a complete game after Saturday's starter, Walker Powell, threw a complete game against WKU.
Powell's 3.86 ERA comes after last weekend's outing where he struck out four batters in 4 and 2/3 innings. Powell's totaled 34 strike outs in nine appearances.
Matt Wallner's hit streak climbs to six games after smashing his 10th home on of the season on Tuesday night. Wallner's .362 batting average is second on the squad just behind Luke Reynolds' .370. The two have combined for 93 hits, 23 doubles, 17 home runs and 81 RBI.
Under head coach Scott Berry, the Golden Eagles are 11-1 against the Blue Raiders. Southern Miss swept the Blue Raiders on the road last season and outscore Middle 31-19. Middle travels to Hattiesburg currently ninth in conference with a 6-8-1 league record. Last weekend's series against Rice ended in a 5-5 tie.
Friday night's game is Autism Awareness Night at the Pete. Saturday's Letterwinner Day will honor all former staff, manager, player and members of the Southern Miss baseball team while also recognizing the 2008 regional team.
