
Softball Falls to LA Tech in Doubleheader Action

RUSTON, La. - The Southern Miss softball team fell to C-USA West Division foe LA Tech in doubleheader play. The Lady Techsters took the first game, 4-1 and the second, 4-3. The Golden Eagles move to 14-24, 4-7 in C-USA.
Southern Miss combined for eight hits on the day, four in each of the contests. Junior Sarah Van Schaik had quite the day with three hits in the doubleheader along with a run, sac fly and one RBI. Chase Nelson and Karley Nichols both had two hits on the day with both of Nelson's coming in the second game. Caitlyn Aldous had an RBI double in the first game to round out the offense.
LA Tech 4, Southern Miss 1
The Golden Eagles struck first in the top of the second. Van Schaik singled down the left field line and then a two-out RBI double from Aldous scored Van Schaik to put Southern Miss up 1-0.
LA Tech scored two runs in the bottom of the third to take a 2-1 lead after an RBI single to right center scored Morgan Turkoly. The Lady Techsters added two more runs to seal the win, 4-1, after Crowder launched a two-run homer over left field in the bottom of the sixth.
Jillian Johnson got the start and pitched 2 2/3 innings, allowing two runs with one strikeout. Johnson was relieved by Kim Crowson who finished the game allowing two earned runs had 3 1/3 innings under her belt. Johnson was charged with the loss and moves to 2-4 on the season.
LA Tech 4, Southern Miss 3
The Lady Techsters scratched the board first in the night cap putting up one run on a sac fly executed by Page to plate Turkoly.
In the top of the second, Van Schaik hit her third single on the day and advanced to second after Papp was hit by a pitch. Davis put down a sac bunt to move both Van Schaik and Papp over one base and in an attempt to throw Van Schaik out, the catcher overthrew, scoring both runs to put the Golden Eagles up 2-1.
The Golden Eagles add an insurance run in the top of the fifth off a sac fly courtesy of Van Schaik to extend the lead 3-1; but the Lady Techsters tied the game up in the bottom of the fifth off two, two-out hits, 3-3.
Davis led off the sixth and was hit by a pitch to give Southern Miss a base runner but an obstruction call on Davis as she was trying to take second changed the momentum. LA Tech came out in the bottom of the sixth and squeezed a run to take the win, 4-3.
Samantha Robles in the circle pitched five innings, allowing three earned runs with four strikeouts. Crowson came in relief and pitched the final inning with no runs and one strikeout. Robles was credited with a loss and moves to 6-10 on the year.
The series wraps up tomorrow, March 31, with first pitch set at noon CT. The game will be live streamed from CUSA.tv with a paid subscription.
