
Softball Completes Sweep of UTEP with Sunday Win

HATTIESBURG, Miss. â€" The Southern Miss softball team completed the sweep over UTEP with a Sunday win, 4-1. The Golden Eagles move to 14-20, 3-5 on the year.
Southern Miss accounted for seven hits in the game, led by senior Ciarra Cherry who was a triple away from a cycle. The Petal native went 3-for-3 with a single, double, homerun and two RBIs in the contest. Chase Nelson, Destini Brown, Samantha Papp, and Caitlyn Aldous also tallied hits while Nelson, Karley Nichols, Kaley Fruge and Cherry scored the runs.
Kim Crowson got the nod in the circle and pitched a complete game, her fourth of the year, allowing no earned runs on three hits and two strikeouts. The senior moves to 6-6 on the year.
UTEP scored its lone run in the top of the third after a Golden Eagle error but a quick groundout by Tata Davis ended the inning.
The Golden Eagles answered back in the bottom of the fourth with two runs on two hits from Papp and Cherry. The squad continued with the scoring in the bottom of the fifth and sixth inning. Nelson launched a triple to left field to score Fruge in the fifth and Cherry knocked her solo homer in the sixth.
Following this series, the Golden Eagles have a busy week in the state of Louisiana. The squad travels to Baton Rouge on Tuesday to take on LSU for the second time this season before a contest in Thibodeaux against Nicholls State on Wednesday. To wrap up the trip, Southern Miss meets up with LA Tech in Ruston for a three-game series on Friday and Saturday.
