HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss softball team claimed victory in both games of the doubleheader against UTEP on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Eagles won the first game 8-0 in six innings behind nine stolen bases and the second in a 3-1 decision. The team moves to 13-20, 3-5 in C-USA.
Alyssa Davis, better known as Tata, and Ciarra Cherry had hits in both games but Destini Brown put up five stolen bases on the day. Brown had four alone in the first game. The team as a whole had nine stolen bases in game one, a new Softball Complex Record.
Senior Jillian Johnson got the nod in the first game and pitched six shutout innings with three strikeouts and got the win. Samantha Robles started in the second game and pitched a complete game, her fourth on the year, with eight strikeouts and only one earned run.
Southern Miss 8, UTEP 0
The Golden Eagles put up either one or two runs in every inning, except the second to take the 8-0 win over the Miners.
Southern Miss put up two early runs in the first inning behind three hits. Samantha Papp singled to left field and then Cherry with a standup double to centerfield scored Papp while a wild pitch would score Sarah Van Schaik, who had singled up the middle earlier in the inning.
In the bottom of the third, the Black and Gold scored two runs off of no hits and accounted for eight stolen bases. Brown drew a leadoff walk and then stole second to get the ball rolling. She then stole third before Van Schaik drew a walk. With Karley Nichols in to pinch run for Van Schaik, she stole another two bases and Brown stole home. Two batters later and Nichols is stealing home for the second run. A fly out ended the inning and the stealing fest.
Davis knocked a two-run dinger over the left field wall in the bottom of the fifth, her second of her career, to extend the lead for the Golden Eagles, 7-0. A Van Schaik RBI single in the bottom of the sixth sealed the six-inning run-rule win over the Miners.
Southern Miss 3, UTEP 1
Southern Miss scored one run in the bottom of each of the third, fourth and fifth innings to beat the Miners 3-1.
UTEP scored its lone run on the day in the top of the fifth off of Courtney Clayton's bat, a solo home run over the centerfield wall, her fifth on the season.
Chase Nelson, Cherry, Davis, Samantha Reynolds and Caitlyn Aldous all tallied hits in the contest. Aldous knocked a two-out triple, her first of the season, in the bottom of the second but a strikeout kept her on third.
In the bottom of the fifth, Brown reached on a Miner error and the ball went into the dugout but before it did, Nelson came home and scored the winning run. Robles tossed two more innings with two more strikeouts to end the game.
The series will conclude tomorrow at 1 pm CT at the Softball Complex.
