
Softball Falls to Marshall in Doubleheader

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. - The Southern Miss softball team dropped a doubleheader with the Thundering Herd of Marshall on Saturday. The Golden Eagles fell in the first game 7-2 and 6-3 in the second. The series concludes tomorrow in a single game beginning at 11am CT, Noon ET.
Junior Samantha Papp knocked her fourth homerun of the season, a two-run dinger over the left field wall in the second game along with Ciarra Cherry who tallied her second solo homerun of the season, also in the second game.
Chase Nelson, Papp, and Rebekah DiLavore all had multi-hit games in the first contest with Nelson leading the way with three singles. Destini Brown, Sarah Van Schaik, and Cherry all had two hits in game two. The Golden Eagles combined for 20 hits on the day, 10 in each.
Marshall 7, Southern Miss 2
Marshall scratched the board first, a two-run homerun in the bottom of the first inning, putting them up 2-0 early. The Golden Eagles answered back with a run in the top of the second but the Thundering Herd put up three runs in the fourth to extend their lead.
Southern Miss added a second run in the game on a sac fly by Cherry who scored Nelson but Marshall added two insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth. The two teams exchanged a scoreless sixth and then two groundouts ended the game for the Golden Eagles.
Samantha Robles got the starting nod and pitched five complete innings giving up seven runs behind four strikeouts before Jillian Johnson came in relief and pitched one inning with a strikeout. Robles was charged with the loss and moves to 5-7 on the season.
Marshall 6, Southern Miss 3
The Thundering Herd put up four runs in the first inning off three hits and added two more in the second inning to take an early lead, 6-0.
Southern Miss battled with Marshall over the next two innings, putting two runners on base in each but just could not get them plated until the top of the fifth.
Papp knocked a two-run homerun over the left field wall to escape the shutout in the top of the fifth and Cherry with a solo dinger over the center field wall added a third run to the board in the sixth. The Golden Eagles had the bases loaded in the top of the seventh and the tying run on first but a fly out ended the rally and Marshall took the second game, 6-3.
Kim Crowson started in the second game (5-6) and pitched one 1/3 innings giving up six runs before Johnson relieved her and pitched four 2/3 innings giving up no runs with three strikeouts.
Following this series, the Golden Eagles return to Hattiesburg taking on UTSA in a three-game series on March 24 and 25.
