
Softball Drops Series Finale to Marshall

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Southern Miss softball team fell to the Thundering Herd, 4-1, on Sunday in the series finale moving to 11-20, 1-5 on the season.
The Black and Gold had five hits as a squad. Freshman Rebekah DiLavore was 2-for-3 on the day with a double and an RBI single in the seventh inning. Seniors Caitlyn Aldous and Ciarra Cherry along with junior Samantha Papp all tallied singles in the contest.
Samantha Robles (5-8) got the starting nod and pitched five complete innings with four earned runs and two strikeouts. Kim Crowson came in relief in the bottom of the sixth and pitched one inning with no runs and a strikeout.
The teams exchanged scoreless innings until the Herd plated a single run in the bottom of the third off an RBI bunt. Marshall added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth including an inside the park homerun.
Southern Miss put a runner in scoring positon in the top of the third after DiLavore knocked a double and advanced to third on a groundout but the threat was taken away after a snag by the Marshall second baseman.
DiLavore with a two out RBI single to right field plated Cherry for the Southern Miss run in the top of the seventh and moved Tata Davis to third but a groundout ended the scoring threat and the game.
