Golden Eagles Climb Back to Beat LA Tech

RUSTON, La. -Â It wasn't looking pretty for Southern Miss early on against LA Tech, but the squad managed to erase a two-set deficit to knock off the Lady Techsters in five sets (19-25, 19-25, 25-16, 25-23, 15-11). LA Tech, who now sits at 1-12 in Conference USA play, jumped to an 8-3 lead early in the first set put the Golden Eagles in a tough spot.Â
Southern Miss was able to cut the deficit to one near the end of the set, but the Lady Techsters scored four of the last five points to steal the first set. LA Tech saw similar success in the second set as the neared a sweep against the Golden Eagles. However, Southern Miss responded by walking through the Lady Techsters, leading by as many as 10 before forcing a fourth set.Â
The Golden Eagles, needing a win in the fourth set, jumped to 9-4 lead to give themselves some breathing room. The Golden Eagles continued to hold onto their lead as LA Tech inched closer to tying up the game. While the Lady Techsters pulled within one on two occasions late in the set, Southern Miss held on to force a winner-take-all fifth set.Â
Backed by Catherine Repsher and Kylie Grandy's 19 kills, the Golden Eagles won the fifth set via a 15-11 score. Sarah Bell also contributed with a game-high 53 assists. Already having a stellar season in terms of her hitting percentage, Alexis Coombs posted a .478 clip to lead the Golden Eagles. With 22 digs, Madison Lawler not only led the Golden Eagles, but also LA Tech. The Golden Eagles finished their night with six blocks and a .191 hitting percentage.Â
Cyan Blackdeer stepped up for the Golden Eagles with six kills, as did Ashley Chapman. Chapman had two kills and 11 digs on the night.Â
Southern Miss will travel to North Texas for its season finale on Sunday. The game is slated to start at 1 p.m.
