
Volleyball Drops Alabama A&M in Final Home Game

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss volleyball team concluded its 2018 home slate with an emphatic win over Alabama A&M (25-10, 27-29, 25-12, 25-5). The Golden Eagles allowed a season-low five points in the final frame. The Golden Eagles moved to 15-13 with the win over the SWAC leader.
The Golden Eagles hopped to a quick lead as they found themselves up by seven in a blink of an eye. The Lady Bulldogs were able to cut the deficit, but Southern Miss went on to score 10 of the final 12 points in the opening set. Ashley Berry smacked a team-high five kills in the set to give Southern Miss the lead. Alabama A&M was able to avoid set point three times en route to a 29-27 win in the second set.
In the third set, Southern Miss dominated en route to a 25-12 win. The Golden Eagles were backed by a 14-2 run in that set before Alabama A&M scored three points to momentarily avoid set point. In the fourth set, Southern Miss allowed a season-low five points. The Golden Eagles jumped to an 11-1 lead before Alabama A&M scored another point. After that, the Golden Eagles secured the win via a 14-3 run.
Berry finished with a game-high 12 kills and .440 hitting percentage. Alexis Coombs finished with 11 kills on 15 attempts for a .600 hitting percentage. Sarah Bell finished her Reed Green career with 37 assists, five kills, four service aces, six digs and two blocks. Madison Lawler had a team-high nine digs.
The Golden Eagles will conclude their C-USA slate with a match against LA Tech on Thursday in Ruston, La. Then, Southern Miss will battle North Texas in a rematch of Sunday's contest.
