
Lady Eagles Beat Samford at Home

Allie Kennedy had a breakout game against the Bulldogs.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Lady Eagles got back to their winning ways on Sunday against Samford in Reed Green Coliseum, posting a 76-40 win over the Bulldogs.
Southern Miss (3-1) was on fire from the start, shutting down shot after shot made by Samford (3-2) in the first quarter. The Bulldogs saw their first points with mere seconds left on the clock, a jumper made by Shauntai Battle in the paint putting them on the board. The Lady Eagles had 11 defensive rebounds that quarter, playing with a steady hand against the 3-pointer-prone Samford offense.
The Lady Eagles never let the lead get out from under them. They held the Bulldogs to just eight points in the second quarter and 10 in the first half overall. Allie Kennedy was the leading scorer for Southern Miss, having herself a breakout day with 17 points, nine of which came from the 3-point line. She had nearly perfect shooting, going 7-for-8 from the field overall. The Bulldogs came back after the half with a different tempo than before, and matched the 18 points Southern Miss had in the third quarter.
USM out-rebounded the Bulldogs 38-15. On the defensive side, the Lady Eagles posted 30 boards. Alarie Mayze and Megan Brown led the way with eight and six rebounds, respectively. Seven of Mayze's were defensive and so were all six of Brown's. The Lady Eagles capitalized on the opportunities made by Samford's mistakes, with both Shonte Hailes and Mayze finishing with two steals each.
Southern Miss improves to 5-2 when playing against the Bulldogs, and are now 4-0 when playing Samford at Reed Green. The Lady Eagles are now 3-1 on the season with the Lady Eagle Thanksgiving Classic in their sights.
