Huntington, W. Va. - The Southern Miss volleyball is set to take on No. 2 Western Kentucky on Friday at the 2018 Conference USA Tournament. The seventh-seeded Golden Eagles will take on the Hilltoppers at 5 p.m. (ET) in the Cam Henderson Center on the campus of Marshall.Â
The last time out
Last weekend, the Golden Eagles started off their road swing with an impressive five-set win after trailing by two sets against Louisiana Tech. Backed by Kylie Grandy and Catherine Repsher's 19 kills, Southern Miss stormed back and cruised to a third-set win before stealing the final two sets from the Lady Techsters. Sarah Bell added a game-high 53 helpers, while Alexis Coombs added six blocks to an already impressive season at the net. On the defensive side, Madison Lawler led the squad with 22 digs.Â
Two days later, Southern Miss fell in straight sets to North Texas. The Mean Green took the first set, 25-18, but Southern Miss lost the final two sets by just a combined four points. Grandy added another 13 kills to her weekend total, and Bell had 30 more assists. Repsher and Coombs recorded seven and six kills, respectively. Coombs paced the Golden Eagles with four blocks and Grandy had a team-high seven digs.Â
Scouting WKU
The Hilltoppers head into the contest riding a six-game winning streak, which jumpstarted after back-to-back losses to UAB and Austin Peay. In the first meeting against Southern Miss this season, WKU escaped Hattiesburg with a dramatic five-set victory. The reigning C-USA champs won the first set before dropping the second and fourth sets to Southern Miss. In a fifth set that was closer than the score shows, WKU won 15-11.Â
The Hilltoppers are led by Rachel Anderson, who was tabbed as a First Team All-Conference USA selection, and Sophia Cerino, a Second Team All-Conference USA selection. Anderson has 387 kills and owns a .351 hitting percentage. Cerino accumulated 41 service aces and a .329 hitting percentage.Â
What's at stake
Playing in the C-USA Tournament quarterfinals, the winner of Friday's match will get a spot in the semifinal on Saturday against the winner of FIU and UTSA. The Golden Eagles have won their last three opening-round games at the C-USA Tournament, meaning this years senior class is a perfect 3-0. The game will mark Stephanie Radecki's first postseason tournament as the Southern Miss head coach.Â
