Golden Eagles Sweep Southern in Regular Season Opener

The Golden Eagles controlled the match from start to finish, hitting .427 as a team while recording 45 kills. Sadie McAda and Diana Wells led the Golden Eagles offensively with 11 kills each, while Aubrey Judd provided another strong offensive performance, recording nine kills without committing an attack error and hitting .562. Allie Hazelwood shined in her Golden Eagle debut as she directed the offense with 37 assists. Sadie McAda also led the squad on defense with 16 digs alongside Elly Stewart's five blocks.
Southern Miss came out of the gates hot. After dropping the opening point of the match, the Golden Eagles scored 11 straight to claim an 11-1 advantage. Southern Miss maintained a comfortable lead for the remainder of the set, ultimately claiming the opening frame, 25-15.
Southern stepped up the pressure in the second set, jumping out to an early 5-1 lead courtesy of back-to-back service aces. The Golden Eagles kept their composure and battled back but still trailed 15-13 at the media timeout. Following the stoppage, it was all Southern Miss, as the Golden Eagles scored seven of the next nine points to force a Jaguars timeout. Southern Miss continued to apply pressure following the timeout, holding Southern scoreless the rest of the way to take the second set, 25-17.
The Golden Eagles carried that momentum into the third set, scoring early and often to build an 11-3 advantage. Southern responded with a short run of its own to cut the deficit to five, but a kill followed by an ace from Elly Stewart helped Southern Miss reestablish control with a 15-7 lead at the media timeout. Southern scored the first point out of the break, but the Golden Eagles answered with a 10-4 run to close out the set, 25-15, and secure the sweep.
The Golden Eagles return to action tomorrow for a pair of matches at the Gamecock Classic, facing Jacksonville at 11 a.m. before taking on Jacksonville State at 5:30 p.m.
