Southern Miss Sits in Seventh after Opening Day of Wolfpack Intercollegiate

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss men's golf team shot rounds of 285 and 284 over the first two day of the Wolfpack Intercollegiate Saturday at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course at NC State in Raleigh, N.C., to hold seventh place.
Despite shooting one stroke better as a team in the second round, the Golden Eagles fell from second place after the opening round into seventh, but find themselves just six strokes out of the lead heading into the final day of play, Sunday, with 18 holes starting at 7 a.m., CT at the par 72 7,358-yard course.
Of the 10 individual rounds played by the Golden Eagles, six were for par or better.
Freshman Joey Kirkland (West Monroe, La.) led the way for Southern Miss with rounds of 71 and 68 for a 139 stroke total and a fourth-place tie.
Junior Matt Lorenz (Gulf Shores, Ala.) added rounds of 73 and 71 for a 144 and a 28th-place tie, while redshirt senior Nathan Corchis (Water Sound, Fla.) added rounds of 72 and 73 to tie for 38th place.
Both junior Walker Kesterson (Hartsburg, Mo.) and sophomore Brian Richards hold a 57th place with a 149 as the duo collected rounds of 77-72 and 69-80, respectively.
Host NC State leads the way with a two-round total of -13 under par total of 563, while Jacksonville and Campbell each sits in second at -10, followed by UNCG at -9, East Carolina and Mayland at -8 and Southern Miss at -7 in the 15-team field.
