HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss men's golf team returns to action this weekend when they travel to Raleigh, N.C., for the Wolfpack Invitational being played at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course at NC State.
The Golden Eagles will play in the 54-hole event on the par 72, 7,358-yard course with 36 holes taking place on Saturday with the final 18 coming on Sunday.
Under first-year coach Eddie Brescher, the Golden Eagles captured their first tournament of the year in their last outing, by posting a nine-under par team total of 843 to capture the Sam Hall Intercollegiate last month.
"We have never played this golf course before," said Brescher. "It is a much different type of golf than what we are used to in the south. This course has a lot of undulation and hills that we do not get to practice on day in and day out. However, our team has played golf courses like this many times in the past. We are utilizing our time in the practice round to adjust to lines off of the teebox, the undulations, and the bentgrass greens."
Junior Matt Lorenz (Gulf Shores, Ala.) leads the way for the Golden Eagles after capturing his first collegiate tournament in the Sam Hall Intercollegiate with an eight-under 205.
Fellow junior Walker Kesterson (Hartsburg, Mo.) finish tied for fourth in that event with a three-under total of 208, while freshman Joey Kirkland (West Monroe, La.) placed with an 18th-place tie in his first collegiate event. Sophomore Brian Richards (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) and senior Nathan Corchis round out the field for Southern Miss in the event.
"We are looking forward to carrying over our momentum from the Sam Hall," said Brescher. "We have a very experienced and talented lineup this week."
The 13-team field includes host NC State, Campbell, East Carolina, George Mason, Georgia State, High Point, Jacksonville, Lipscomb, Loyola-Maryland, Maryland, Southern Miss, Virginia Tech and Wofford.
