HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss shot team rounds of 292 and 296, Saturday, to hold eighth place in the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational being played at the Steelwood Country Club in Loxley, Ala.
The Golden Eagles shot a four-over 292 on the par-72, 7,096-yard course to hold down fourth after the opening round, before finishing the day with an eight-over 296 to garner eighth with 18 holes remaining on Sunday. The final round gets going at 8 a.m., with players starting on the No. 1 and No. 10 tees.
"We got off to a good start in the first round and held it for a while," said Southern Miss coach Eddie Brescher. "After losing a few shots to par at the end of the first round, this made it tough to regain our momentum heading into round two."
Senior Derick Kelting led the Golden Eagles with rounds of 71 and 75 for a 146 and 22nd-place tie, while both juniors Matt Lorenz (75 and 72) and Walker Kesterson (70 and 77) each tallied a 36-hole 147 to carry a tie for 28th. Freshman Joey Kirkland added a 76 and a 72 for a 148 and a tie for 35th, while sophomore Brian Richards shot a 77 and 79 for a 156 and a 65th-place tie.
"Eighth is not where we expect to be on the leaderboard," said Brescher. "However, our guys never gave up. All five of our guys kept grinding the entire day."
No. 7 ranked Wake Forest leads the team scoring with a minus-13 563, followed by Kennesaw State with a minus-4 572. Indiana (576) holds third, with Mississippi State (579), Richmond (584), South Alabama and Kansas State (587), Southern Miss (588), Rice (589), Kentucky (593), Wofford (594) and North Alabama (595) rounding out the team scores.
Now the Golden Eagles set their sites for the final round of the fall schedule on Sunday.
"We always talk about being tough as a team," said Brescher. "We already have our sights set on the final round and making a push to move up the board. We look forward to closing in good fashion tomorrow."
