HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss men's golf team finishes up the fall portion of its season Saturday and Sunday at the Steelwood Collegiate in Loxley, Ala.
Being played at the par-72, 7,096-yard course Steelwood Country Club, the tournament begins Saturday with 36 holes and an 8:30 a.m., shotgun start. The event concludes the following day with a final round beginning at 8 a.m., with players starting on holes 1 and 10.
"Our lineup this week have proven they can win," said first-year coach Eddie Brescher. "All five of our guys have had good practice sessions since our last event. This team is tough and confident. If we just go out and play aggressive, we will be fine this week."
Junior Matt Lorenz, who leads the squad with a stroke average 71.13 and has one victory under his belt this fall, headlines the Golden Eagles in the event. Junior Walker Kesterson holds a 72.6 stroke per round average and one top 10 finish, while sophomore Brian Richards, senior Derick Kelting and freshman Joey Kirkland round out the Southern Miss participants in the 72-person field.
"This event presents a great opportunity to close our fall season on a positive note," said Brescher. "We will face a good field this week. The thing in our favor is that we have played this course before and have had success here."
Joining the Golden Eagles in the tournament field will be Indiana, Kansas State, Kennesaw State, Kentucky, Mississippi State, North Alabama, Rice, Richmond, South Alabama, No. 7 ranked Wake Forest and Wofford.
