Coaches take part in unique Women’s Basketball and Baseball Preseason event on Friday, Oct. 19th.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – With the women's basketball season about a month away, Southern Miss announced a preseason kick-off event Tuesday between Head Coach Joye Lee-McNelis and baseball's Head Coach Scott Berry.
The preseason event will be a competition between two teams comprised of a mix of women's basketball and baseball student-athletes competing in various challenges. The event will take place on Friday, Oct. 19, at 6 p.m. in Reed Green Arena. Admission is free.
Coach McNelis and Coach Berry will hold a draft prior to the event where they will alternate to select a roster of 13 student-athletes made up of half women's basketball players and half baseball players.
"It's a great way to kick-off the season and celebrate two programs that have experienced a lot of success. It will give fans a great opportunity to see the personality of our players and a chance for them to experience a unique competition with some different student-athletes." said Head Coach Joye Lee-McNelis.
The event will feature three competitions with the student-athletes on each team competing in one contest each. The first competition will be a basketball skills challenge that incorporates dribbling, passing and shooting. The second contest will involve each player making a free throw and then riding a lap of the basketball court on a tricycle. The final competition will be a home run derby.
The event will also feature introductions of each team, performances by the Southern Misses dance team and Cheer squad, prizes for fans, and a post-event autograph session and meet and greet with both teams.
The Southern Miss Lady Eagles begin their season Tuesday, Nov. 6, against William Carey at 11 a.m. Season tickets are available from $50 (general admission) to $100 (courtside), which can be purchased through SouthernMissTickets.com, calling 1-800-844-TICK, or visiting the Pat Ferlise Center during normal business hours.
