Men's Golf Finishes Opening Day of Jim Rivers Intercollegiate

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss men's golf team collected rounds of 299 and 300 to hold 12th place after the opening day of the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate Monday, being played at Squire Creek Country Club in Choudrant, La.
At the par 72, 7,070-yard course, the Golden Eagles had a string of team five-straight par or below rounds snapped.
Junior Walker Kesterson of Hartsburg, Mo., and sophomore Brian Richards of Gulf Breeze, Fla., led the Golden Eagles with 36 hole scores of 149 to each tie for 40th-place. Kesterson shot rounds of 74 and 75, while Richards added a 76 and 73.
Junior Matt Lorenz of Gulf Shores, Ala., contributed a 76 and 74 for a 150 total and a 45th-place tie, while freshman Joey Kirkland of West Monroe, La., collected a 75 and 78 for a 153 and a 61st-place tie. Senior Nathan Corchis of Water Sound, Fla., added a 74 and 80 for a 154 and is in a 67th-place tie.
UAB leads the event with a 20-under-par 566, with Georgia on the Blazers' heels, just two strokes off the lead at -18 with a 558.
Cincinnati ranks third at (580), followed by Lamar (583), Abilene Christian (585), Oklahoma City (586), Louisiana Tech (589), Troy and Central Arkansas (590), Middle Tennessee (596), Southeastern Louisiana (597), Southern Miss (599), New Orleans and Stephen F. Austin (603) and Nicholls (605).
The final round of the tournament takes place at 8 a.m., Tuesday, with a shotgun start. Fans can follow the action here.
