CHARLOTTE, N.C. â€" The Southern Miss women's basketball team (8-6, 0-1) was beat 66-56 by the Charlotte 49ers (5-9, 1-0) Thursday afternoon.
The Lady Eagles got off to a quick start, jumping out in front 4-0, and defended Charlotte well as it would take the 49ers more than three minutes to score its first bucket. The 49ers would score three straight points and would control the lead until a Megan Brown three-pointer tied it at 7-7 with 3:32 remaining in the first quarter. A Charlotte jumper 18 seconds later would push the 49ers in front for the remainder of the contest.
In the second half the 49ers would lead by as many as 21, but Southern Miss' pressure defense kicked it up, forcing 10 of their 19 total turnovers in the second half, sparking an 8-0 run to bring it within 10, but Charlotte free throws were able to keep the Lady Eagles at bay.
Megan Brown led all scorers with a career-high 20 points. She is the fifth Lady Eagle to score 20 or more points this season and bested her previous career high of 17 that she had set earlier this season. Her eight field goals tied her career-high and she also collected eight rebounds.
Jayla King registered her sixth double-double of the season after adding 12 points and 10 rebounds. Moly Brown tied her career-high in back-to-back games on a career-high three three-pointers made. Her effort from the three-point line helped the Lady Eagles set their season-high three-point mark at six.
Southern Miss finishes its road swing in Bowling Green, Ky. for a 2:00 p.m. contest against WKU on Saturday Dec. 6. The game, a rematch of last season's C-USA Championship Game, is the sixth all-time meeting and just the third that has come in E.A. Diddle Arena.
Fans can watch the game on CUSA.TV or listen to Josh West on the broadcast via The Score 1400 AM and the Southern Miss Game Day App starting 30 minutes before tipoff.
