HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss junior right-handed pitcher Colt Smith earned the Conference USA Pitcher of the Week Monday in an announcement by the league office.
In his first career start for the Golden Eagles, Smith limited No. 28 Florida Atlantic to just hits and two walks over seven innings of work for the victory as he improved to 4-0 on the season. He allowed just five batters to reach bases (one was an addition hit by pitch) and only two runners reached second base. After allowing a one-out walk in the fourth, Smith retired the final 11 batters he faced. The Myrtle, Mississippi, native did not give up a hit after the second inning.
Louisiana Tech senior OF Raphael Gladu and Marshall senior OF Sam Finfer were named Co-Conference USA Hitters of the Week.
The award for Smith was the first for him and the first C-USA Pitcher of the Week accolade for the program since Cody Carroll garnered the award on May 4, 2015. The Golden Eagles, which hold the C-USA lead with a 37-12 overall record and a 19-5 league mark, also saw three C-USA Hitter of the Week awards.
The Golden Eagles return to action this weekend when they entertain UAB in a three-game series. The game schedule includes a 6 p.m., contest Friday, a 2 p.m., start on Saturday and a 1 p.m., Sunday finale. The 2017 senior class of Dylan Burdeaux, Tracy Hadley and Hunter Stevens will be recognized prior to the Saturday game.
