
Softball Edged in the Seventh Inning by Mississippi State

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss softball team battled SEC foe Mississippi State hard, but fell 3-2 in Hattiesburg, Miss. The squad moves to 16-16, 3-6 on the season.
The score remained tied at 0-0 until the Golden Eagles scored a run in the bottom of the fourth on a solo home run by Jade Lewis, her third on the season, to take the lead. The Black and Gold added another run in the sixth inning to double the score, 2-0.
In the sixth inning, Tori Dew singled to center field to give Southern Miss a baserunner. Selena Estrada came in to run for Dew. Caitlyn Aldous reached on a Bulldog error advancing Estrada all the way to third. Aldous got herself in a rundown but it was long enough for Estrada to steal home before being tagged out.
The Bulldogs put three runs on the board in the top of the seventh to capture the win, 3-2.
Offensively, Southern Miss recorded three hits on the night. Samantha Reynolds, Jade Lewis, Tori Dew each recorded a hit.
In the circle, the Black and Gold used a pair of pitchers on the night. Kim Crowson earned the start and was charged with the loss. The sophomore tossed 6 1/3 innings surrendering three runs on four hits with five walks and a strikeout. She did not allow any runs through the first six innings, but was charged with three runs in the sixth. Samantha Robles entered the game in relief. She allowed a hit in 2/3 innings of work.
Southern Miss hits the road tomorrow to take on Jackson State in Jackson, Miss. but returns home this weekend to take on C-USA opponent Marshall in a three-game series.
