Softball Claims C-USA Series Win Over UTEP

EL PASO, Texas - Three solo home runs, two by Lauren Holifield and one by Jade Lewis, highlighted Game Three and the series win (6-1) against UTEP. The squad moves to 16-15, 3-6 on the season.
The Golden Eagles scratched the board first in the top of the first inning. Ciarra Cherry got things started with a leadoff walk followed by a Samantha Reynolds sac bunt but an error kept Reynolds in the game and advanced Cherry to third. Lauren Holifield brought Cherry home with an RBI fielder's choice and then Tori Dew stepped up and brought Reynolds home with a single RBI. The inning was snatched away by a double play but the Black and Gold took the early lead, 2-0.
Lauren Holifield knocked a solo home run, her sixth on the season, over the right center wall to increase the lead 3-0 in the top of the third. The Miners got out of the inning with two quick groundouts but couldn't respond in the bottom.
UTEP got on the board in the fourth inning after putting together two hits and a fielder's choice to plate a single runner.
Southern Miss notched a single run in each the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings. Holifield hit her seventh home run of the season in the top of the fifth and Jade Lewis with her second on the season in the top of the sixth to increase the score, 5-1. In the seventh, Cherry reached on a fielder's choice and was moved up by Reynolds before Holifield came up to bat and hit a standup double to bring Cherry home and seal the victory.
In the circle, Samantha Robles got her eighth start on the season. Robles pitched her third complete game only allowing one run on four hits and only walking two Miners.
The Golden Eagles return home when they take on the Bulldogs of Mississippi State in a single game at the Softball Complex, Tuesday, March 28. First pitch is slated for 6 pm.
