Softball Splits Doubleheader With UTEP

El Paso, Texas - The Southern Miss softball team split the conference doubleheader against UTEP, falling 12-2 and winning 6-2 in the nightcap, on Saturday in El Paso, Texas. The Golden Eagles move to 15-15, 2-6 on the season.
The two teams will conclude the series with a noon CT Sunday matchup.
UTEP 12, Southern Miss 2 (5)
The Miners got out in front early with a four-run, four-hit second inning.
Southern Miss responded in the top of the third plating two runners. Rachel Johnson singled to centerfield, Chase Nelson singled to left field and Samantha Reynolds with a sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third base. A Lauren Holifield two RBI single up the middle plated Nelson and Johnson to cut the score in half, 4-2.
UTEP answered back in the bottom of the third bringing in five runs on five hits and added some insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth moving the score to 12-2.
The Golden Eagles tried to respond in the top of the fifth. A Miner error putting Nelson on first and a Reynolds single to put two runners on, Holifield was up to bat. Holifield reached on a fielder's choice, Nelson was out on the play. The game ended with a fly ball to center field ending the scoring threat by the Black and Gold.
Overall, the Black and Gold had five hits in the game. Reynolds, Holifield, Ciarra Cherry, Johnson and Nelson all had singles including Holifield's two RBI in the top of the third.
Kim Crowson (6-5) got the start in game one, pitching 2 1/3 innings allowing six runs on seven hits. Jillian Johnson came in relief and pitched 1.0 inning allowing six runs on seven hits. Danielle Block got her third appearance this season and pitched 2/3 innings allowing no runs on one hit.
Southern Miss 6, UTEP 2
UTEP got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning after a double, single and sac fly plated a runner.
Eva Scott got things going for the Golden Eagles in the third with a lead-off walk. Nelson followed up with a single to third base. Nelson turned around and stole second and Scott stole home for the first run. Cherry was walked, putting runners in the corners with Reynolds coming up to bat. Reynolds with the sac bunt and Holifield with a sac fly plated another run. Tori Dew reached on an error bringing Cherry home to finish up the inning in the lead, 3-1.
The Miners responded right away with a single run but two quick groundouts wasn't enough to tie it up. The teams exchanged scoreless innings until the Golden Eagles struck again in the top of the sixth. Dew with a leadoff single right up the middle, Bailey Stokes with a sac bunt and Aldous reaching on an error put runners in the corners. Scott knocked a double down the right line to bring Arielle Pollock and Caitlyn Aldous home increasing the lead, 5-2.
In the seventh inning, Southern Miss had an insurance run on three hits to secure the win.
In the circle, Samantha Robles (2-5) pitched her second complete game allowing two runs on six hits and recording four strikeouts.
