Southern Miss Softball Splits Doubleheader with UAB

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Southern Miss softball team splits a doubleheader with Conference USA rival UAB. The Golden Eagles took game one 10-4 and then dropped 3-2 in game two. Southern Miss moves to 12-10, 1-2 C-USA on the season.
 Offensively, the Golden Eagles had 16 hits on the day, including three home runs in game one.
 In the circle, Kim Crowson got the nod to start both games on the day. In game one Crowson pitched her fifth complete game on the season only allowing four runs on three hits with five strikeouts and two walks. In game two, Crowson allowed no runs on three hits in 4 innings of work. Jillian Johnson came in relief and pitched 2 1/3 inning allowing three runs on three hits.
 Southern Miss will continue on the road when they take on Alabama State, Tuesday March 14, with first pitch slated for 5:00 p.m. in Montgomery, Ala.
 Southern Miss 10, UAB 4
 Southern Miss got things started early in the first half inning when Lauren Holifield drew a leadoff walk. Jade Lewis reached on a fielding error and Bailey Stokes was walked to load the bases up. A Caitlyn Aldous single brought Holifield home for the first run of the game. A fielding error by the Blazers and another walk brought in two more runs. UAB escaped the inning with a ground double play. Southern Miss went on top 3-0 early.
 UAB responded in the bottom of the second inning with four runs on one hit. A similar situation that Southern Miss capitalized on happened for the Blazers, two walks and a fielding error loaded bases. A double to center field brought in three of the four runs of the inning. UAB was unable to bring any more runs in the game.
 Top of the fourth for the Golden Eagles, freshman Jade Lewis knocked her first home run as a Golden Eagle bringing in two runs to take back the lead, 5-4.
 A combined five runs on six hits in the inning extended the Golden Eagle lead. Holifield with a leadoff homer to left center brought the score 6-4. Tori Dew singled to left field and Lewis singled through the left side to give Southern Miss two base runners when Bailey Stokes stepped up to the plate. Stokes hit an absolute bomb over left center for a three RBI home run to add some insurance. The inning wasn't over though, Tori Rouse came in to pinch hit with a runner on third and singled to bring the runner in for the fifth run of the inning.
 UAB was unable to respond to the quick defense and phenomenal pitching by Kim Crowson in game one.
 UAB 3, Southern Miss 2
 The Golden Eagles lost a heartbreaker in game two of the doubleheader. Southern Miss and UAB exchanged scoreless innings until the top of the fifth.
 In the seventh inning, Samantha Reynolds drew a walk to start things off. Chase Nelson singled to the shortstop advancing Reynolds to second, the next at bat, Holifield singled through the right side to load the bases. A Dew sac fly brings Reynolds home to add a run on bringing the score 2-0 going into the bottom of the seventh.
 UAB rallied back in the bottom of the seventh with three runs on two hits. A Blazer walk, a single up the middle that advanced on the throw set up the score. UAB with a two RBI single up the middle tied the game up. A throwing error brought the third runner in and the Blazers captured the series.
