BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Southern Miss men's and women's indoor track and field teams had a strong showing at the Samford Invitational on Friday in Birmingham, Ala.
Southern Miss had two event winners in Donald Daley and Cravorkian Carson. Daley tossed an 18.01m mark in the weight throw securing a first place finish, he also competed in the shot put finishing sixth with a 15.86m mark. Carson won the 60m with a time of 6.76.
"Today was a near perfect competition. Season bests and personal bests show that our hard work has paid off and that we are ready to be at our best next weekend when it matters the most, said assistant coach John Ellis. "Each event area has progressed across the board. It's a good feeling heading into a championship meet knowing we are strong in just about every event."
In the women's shot put teammates Brashe' Wood and Alexis Chiles went second and third with 14.89m and 14.70m marks. Nadia Maffo finished third in the weight throw with a new school record of an 18.62m toss, Danisha Jones came in seventh with a 17.22m throw.
"Nadia Maffo did a great job anchoring the throws squad for a successful weekend by crushing the previous school record," said assistant coach Jennifer Svoboda. "Overall I was very pleased with our competitive edge and our consistency across the board. Everyone is ready for big things at this year's indoor championship. I can't wait to see what we can do as a collective group."
For the women's team, Keiyana Gaskin got it started with a third place finish in the 60m dash with a time of 7.62; Kadaria Thompson came in sixth with a time of 7.72. Modesty Lorick followed it with a second place finish in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.59. In the 200m, Nina Nkem came in fourth with a time of 25.03. Adriana Allen took second in the 400m with a time of 54.56, teammate Aireanna Taylor finished seventh with a time of 57.23.
Rounding out the women was Savannah McMillon and Natalya Hall-Dekleva in the 800. McMillon finished third with a time of 2:12.82 and Hall-Dekleva finished sixth with a time of 2:13.87.
"Good runs out of the two freshman today in the 800," said assistant coach Aaron Kindt. "That was a lifetime best for Savannah and an indoor personal best for Natalya. A lot of good momentum heading into championship week."
On the men's side, Alexander Richemond ran the 200m dash in 21.70 placing him fourth overall. Caleb Parker came in fifth in the high jump with a 2.05m leap. In the 400m Curtis Walker finished fifth with a time of 49.44, Lorenzen Burton also ran in the 400m, finished eighth with a 49.89.
"We came away with some season bests from Adriana Allen, Donald Daley, Nadia Maffo, and Modesty Lorick, and we had some high level performances from some of our freshmen too," said head coach Jon Stuart. "We didn't get everything done that we needed, but we have a week to get healthy and rested before CUSA. If we compete like we have the past two weeks, we'll score very well at the conference meet."
The Golden Eagles return back to action Feb. 18-19 at the Conference USA Indoor Championships, hosted by UAB in Birmingham, Ala.
