HATTIESBURG, Miss. - In the stadium that Southern Miss baseball head coach Scott Berry calls "one of the magical places in college baseball," the Golden Eagle baseball team looks to capitalize on a record-setting 2016 season, which included its 13th NCAA postseason appearance.
The Golden Eagle baseball team gives credit to the fans at Pete Taylor Park, commonly referred to as "The Pete," for helping them collect a 28-4 record at home and advance to its first NCAA Regional appearance since 2011.
"There's no better place than Pete Taylor Park, and that's evident by the attendance records that we hold and break each year," said Berry of the atmosphere at "The Pete."
The Golden Eagles ranked 21st in the country and first in Conference USA with an average attendance of 3,126 per game. The Eagles also racked up a total of 96,917 attendees for the entire 2016 season at Pete Taylor Park.
Last season, the Golden Eagles gathered the sixth largest crowd in history at Pete Taylor Park with 4,950 in attendance, on April 23, against C-USA opponent, Rice. Attendance also soared above 3,000 for 16 of its home games in 2016.
The largest crowd in Pete Taylor Park history sits at 5,689 when the Golden Eagles hosted Ole Miss on March 30, 2011.
As exciting of times last season provided for Southern Miss fans, the Golden Eagles are looking forward to even more of those in 2017.
The Southern Miss baseball team opens the 2017 season at home against Northeastern at 4 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 17.
