Southern Miss 34, Louisiana Tech 27 (Double OT)
Oct. 21, 2017
General
* Tonight's Attendance â€" 17,815
* Captains â€" 19 Curtis Mikell, 23 Collin Kilcrease, 25 Ito Smith
* Coin Toss â€" Louisiana Tech won the toss and deferred to second half; Southern Miss will defend the north goal.
* It was the first overtime contest for Southern Miss since Oct. 13, 2012 at UCF.
* It was also the first Golden Eagle win in extra sessions since the 2008 New Orleans Bowl versus Troy.
* Southern Miss is 3-0 on the road for the first time since 2004 (Nebraska, Tulane, South Florida).
* The Golden Eagles have their first three-game win streak since a six-game span in 2015.
* The series is now 34-15 and Southern Miss has won three straight and 10 of the last 13.
* The game was delayed 50 minutes at the 6:17 mark of the first quarter due to lightning.
* This season was just the second time that Southern Miss played ULM and Louisiana Tech, located approximately 30 miles between campuses, in the same season and the first time playing both in Louisiana. The Golden Eagles beat ULM in the season opener in 1982, 45-27, and lost to LA Tech 13-6 in the season finale. Both games were played in Hattiesburg.
* Southern Miss won the overtime coin toss and chose to play defense in the south endzone.
Offensive Notes
* Ito Smith went over 1,000 all-purpose yards for the third-straight season as he finished the game with 88 and now has 1,035 this season.
* With a 23-yard receiving touchdown in the second quarter, Ito Smith recorded a touchdown for his sixth-straight game.
* Freshman Tim Jones made his first career catch early in the second quarter of 18 yards.
* The Golden Eagles' third field goal of the game ended an 18-play, 8:45 drive. Both of those numbers were the longest for Southern Miss this season.
* Korey Robertson had career-highs of nine catches and 127 yards. His final grab was the go-ahead, 25-yarder on the first play of double-OT that proved to be the game-winner.
* It is his third multi-TD game of the season, matching his Kentucky and ULM performances.
* Tez Parks had five catches for 29 yards, his first multi-reception game since Appalachian State in 2014. He had two grabs for 29 yards on the season entering the night.
* Southern Miss has not been sacked in two consecutive games. It had the same feat last year against Savannah State and Troy.
* The 30 first downs were the most by the Golden Eagles since having 32 at Kentucky in the 2016 opener.
Defensive Notes
* Tarvarius Moore intercepted a pass on LA Tech's first overtime series and returned it 54 yards. It was his second pick of the season (vs. Southern, Sept. 9). His previous two interceptions were against LSU and UL Lafayette.
* It was also his first-career INT return.
* Paxton Schrimsher forced his second fumble on the last play of the first half and Darian Yancey recovered his first loose ball of his career.
* Scrimsher tallied two tackles for loss to tie his career high.
* Schrimsher also recovered the onside kick that set up Southern Miss' regulation-tying touchdown with 52 seconds left.
* LA Tech was held to just one third-down conversion in 10 attempts, the best showing since Southern went 0-for-12 on Sept. 9.
Special Team Notes
* Parker Shaunfield finished the game by hitting all four field goal attempts, a new career-high. He had previously collected three each against Kentucky (9/3/16) and Rice (10/1/16).
* Shaunfield's 49-yarder with 1:23 left preceded the onside kick recovery. That boot also tied a career-long (at Kentucky 9/3/16).
* Shaunfield collected a then-season-high 45-yard field goal with 53 seconds left in the first quarter.
* Shaunfield extended his school-record streak to 87 consecutive successful PATs.
