Golden Eagles Start Strong at Blazer Invitational

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Southern Miss men's and women's indoor track and field teams opened up the 2017 indoor season with four event winners at the Blazer Invitational.
Dana Dillistone started the day out strong, capturing the win in the women's one mile run with a time of 5:00.36. Daphney Stanford secured her first place finish in the women's 3000 meters with a time of 9:59.32. Theresa Harto placed third with a time of 10:13.18 and Victoria Hoppe finished sixth with a time of 10:30.93.
"Dana really energized the team with the win in the mile, then we started making finals in almost every event," said Stuart. "We had great performances today from Cravorkian Carson, Donald Daley, and Keiyana Gaskin as well."
Other Golden Eagles with top ten finishes included freshman Keiyana Gaskin who finished second in the 60m dash with a time of 7.64. Trista Barry landed herself a second place finish with a 1.69m in the high jump. Adriana Allen had a third place finish in the 300m dash with a time of 39.20. Teammates Aireanna Taylor and Talia Thompson finished fifth and sixth in the 500m dash with times of 1:16.60 and 1:16.69. Courtney Filliben in the 600m run took fifth with a time of 1:35.42. Monika Gerbarzewksa in the 1000m run with a time of 3:05.06 to place her fifth. Alexis Chiles rounded out the day with a fourth place finish in the shot put with a 14.00m toss.
On the men's side, Patton Little got the men started with an event win, running a time of 8:37.68 in the 3000m run. Donald Daley took his first place in the men's weight throw with a toss of 18:82m. Emron Gibbs finished eighth with a toss of 15.09m.
Cravorkian Carson placed second in the 60m dash with a time of 6.72, teammate Jamad Smith finished eighth with a time of 6.94, respectively. Lorenzen Burton in the 500m dash finished with a time of 1:04.43 placing him third. Mamadou Seck finished the 500m dash with a time 1:05.36 placing him seventh. Caleb Parker placed fourth in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.30.
Davonta Brassell jumped 6.67m in the long jump to place fourth overall. Donald Daley wrapped up the Blazer Invitational with a sixth place in the shot put with a 14.40m toss.
"We had a good competition with more ups than downs. The kids reacted well to the environment and I hope tomorrow, during the Vulcan Invitational, we can keep up this momentum," said Stuart.
The Golden Eagles will pick it back up tomorrow as they compete in the Vulcan Invitational in Birmingham at the Birmingham Crossplex.
