HATTIESBURG, Miss. â€" The Southern Miss soccer team remained undefeated after opening home season with a 1-0 victory over ULM at the Golden Eagle Soccer Complex.
The Golden Eagles (2-0-0) kept constant pressure on the Warhawks defense with nine shots in each half, which was double the amount of shots for ULM. Despite the offensive pressure on Brooke Scroggins in goal, the Golden Eagles wouldn't be able to get a goal until the second half.
With a great outside attack by the Golden Eagles, the speed and strength of Ola Akinniyi got past the Warhakws defense and sent in a tap-in shot for Bri Schubeck to get her first goal of the season in the 52nd minute for the game's lone goal. Akinniyi's ability to see her open teammate inside the 6-yard box gave the Golden Eagles its second goal of the season.
"I can't take much credit for that goal because Ola could've scored on her own but she was really unselfish and played me the ball instead," Schubeck said. "That's what being a team is about."
Southern Miss Coach Mohammed El-Zare said he was happy about the ball movement in the game and his team's collective effort on the goal made it that much better.
"I look back on what we work on in practice and that's exactly what we did," El-Zare said. "I'm really proud of the way they played."
The Golden Eagles travel to Louisiana-Lafayette for a Sunday showdown Sunday at 1 p.m. They look to remain undefeated in its first three games for a second consecutive season.
