HATTIESBURG, Miss. - During the tenure of Southern Miss men's golf coach Jerry Weeks, the Golden Eagles have never shied away from a tough schedule. The 2016-17 season schedule, which includes 12 tournaments, continues that trend and also brings a new format to one of the team's events.
"We are very excited about our upcoming schedule," said Weeks. "We will face many programs throughout the country, which is key on a national level to spread out our head to head match ups."
The Golden Eagles open the fall portion of the season with the 14th annual Sam Hall Intercollegiate, Sept, 12-13, at the Hattiesburg Country Club and then travel to Squire Creek Country Club in Ruston, La., for the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate (Sept. 19-20). The Memphis Intercollegiate (Sept. 26-27) at the Colonial Country Club will be the next tournament for the Golden Eagles. Southern Miss then competes at the Olde Stone Country Club for the Kenny Perry Invitational (Oct. 10-11) in Bowling Green, Ky., before finishing out the fall portion of its schedule at the David Miller Collegiate (Oct. 29-30) at the Steelwood Country Club in Loxley, Ala.
The team opens the spring at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate (Feb. 20-21) at the Robert Trent Jones - Magnolia Grove Course. Next up will be the Louisiana Classics (Feb. 27-28) at Oakbourne Country Club in Lafayette, La., before traveling to Dallas, Texas, for the ORU Spring Break Invitational (March 14-16) at the TPC Four Seasons. The Golden Eagles finish the month at the FAU Slomin Autism Championship (March 25-27) at The Fountains Country Club in Lake Worth, Fla., and then head to north Mississippi for the Old Waverly Collegiate (April 3-4) at the Old Waverly Country Club in West Point, Miss.
"Some of these tournaments and courses are very familiar to our players, which will be key in our success in these events since our players have a good grasp on what to expect with course set up and any weather conditions we may face," said Weeks. "Many of the courses we are playing are current or former PGA Tour venues, which will be a great test for our team."
The final regular season tournament, the Southern Collegiate Match Play (Apr. 15), takes place at the Hattiesburg Club and will feature Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana Tech, South Alabama and Southern Miss facing off in match play in the one-day event.
"This is a unique event that is excellent preparation for our team to experience right before our Conference USA Championship," said Weeks. "Match Play is a unique format that players can be more aggressive in versus stroke play. I believe this event will turn in to something special for the future and we are proud to host the first one at Hattiesburg Country Club."
The Golden Eagles then travel to Texarkana, Texas, for the 2016 Conference USA Championship, which takes place April 23-26 at the Texarkana Country Club.
